The show was produced by Arthur Hammerstein at the Casino Theatre, and opened February 7, 1923.〔Mantle, Burns, Editor, "The Best Plays of 1922–1923", Dodd, Mead & Company, p. 529.〕 It was staged by Oscar Eagle, choreographed by David Bennett, music orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett, gowns and costumes by Charles LeMaire, and scenic design by Gates & Morgane. It ran for 477 performances, closing on March 29, 1924. According to the sheet music, the actual title was “The Wildflower”. The cast of included Edith Day (Nina Benedetto), Charles Judels (Gaston La Roche), Esther Howard (Lucrezia La Roche), Jerome Daly (Luigi), Olin Howard (Gabrielle), Evelyn Cavanaugh (Bianca Benedetto), James Doyle (Count Alberto), and Guy Robertson (Guido).〔 The plot concerns a pretty Italian peasant named Nina Benedetto (Edith Day) who had a reputation for temper and her way with boys. Gaston La Roche (Charles Judels), a rich, distant, uncle dies leaving her 20,000 lira provided she keep her temper and act like a lady for six months. In order to comply, she has to give up Guido (Guy Robertson), the tenor, her lover, and not let her cousin, Bianca’s (Evelyn Cavanaugh), slurs bother her, which she does.〔Mantle, Burns, Editor, "The Best Plays of 1922–1923", Dodd, Mead & Company, p. 530.〕 Wildflower was Oscar Hammerstein’s first successful musical and Vincent Youmans' second show. Beginning in 1923, It ran over a year because of its “simple-minded story,” according to Stanley Green.〔Green, Stanley, Rodgers and Hammerstein Story, New York: The John Day Company, 1963.〕 It is most curious, however, that the New York Times opening night review reports that the show "contains the most tuneful score that Rudolph Friml has written in a number of seasons" and never mentions Vincent Youmans or Herbert Stothart! The review goes on to say "To be sure, it is practically never funny, and now and then even a little dull." 〔'Wildflower' Is Melodious, New York Times, Thursday, February 8, 1923, page 17.〕 Notwithstanding that review, Wildflower was an instant success due to the amazing singing, Italian setting, and unique inclusion of operetta.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Oscar Hammerstein II )〕 ==Songs== Act I * “I Love You, I Love You, I Love You!” * “Some Like to Hunt” * “Wildflower” * “Bambalina” * “April Blossoms” Act II * “The Best Dance I’ve Had Tonight” * “Course I Will” * “(Girl From) Casimo” * “If I Told You” * “You Never Can Blame a Girl for Dreaming” * “Good-Bye Little Rosebud” Act III * “Bambalina (reprise)” * “The World’s Worst Women” * “You Can Always Find Another Partner” 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Wildflower (musical)」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
